In the fantastical land of Haxter, Prince Fedradin is engrossed in an adventure of epic proportions. While trying to come to terms with his new responsibility as Prince of Destiny, a title which he isn’t sure he wants, this young, banished prince will have to deal with orphaned wizards, elfish princesses, fugitive dwarves, mysterious sorceresses, callous kings and vengeful demons through the swirl of plots and counterplots, assassination, espionage, war, rebellion, romance, magic and mystery. After Fedradin assembles a team of five unlikely heroes and heroines, the group travels to a village in the mountains where they receive an assignment to find magical devices known as Demon Callers and to keep them out of the hands of the evil demon Erch. As the adventure complicates, revenge and honor outweigh the importance of the quest and threaten to tear the group apart. In a tale brought to you by middle school author David Vonderheide, Fedradin must try to thwart Erch and keep peace between the Nine Races, while tackling his fears of trusting others, becoming a leader, and fulfilling his destiny.

From the imagination of a young author comes a story as richly intricate as a Tolkien legend. In the magical world of Haxter, nine sentient races attempt to form a League of Nations style world government that collapses into chaos after an evil demon Lord Erch impersonates the Emperor and assassinates leaders of the various races. Erch gathers various legendary evil followers to help him find the three Demon Callers that will open a portal to the Demon interdimensional plane. Meanwhile a young Fedradin discovers that he is a fated to find the Demon Callers first and stop Erch's evil plans. Along the way he gathers a rag-tag group of companions, battles uncounted numbers of monsters, and uncovers some of the magical essence of Haxter. The story is told in the plain verse style of the Hobbit, and switches perspective among a multitude of characters spread over a host of subplots. The book culminates in a glorious battle sequence with Fedradin finally realizing his full potential as the Prince of Destiny. As an adult reading this book, I was initially struck by the amount of avoidable death (some person or creature meets a gruesome demise in nearly every one of the book's 120 chapters - often with minimal provocation). However the excess of random murders became so commonplace after a while that I got used to it being part of the Haxter mythos. I read aloud excerpts to my children (ages 4 and 6), and they were enthralled right away. We are looking forward to Book Two!

The Prince of Destiny Book One of the Demon Caller Trilogy Mr David Vonderheide 9780990722021 Books Reviews
10/10 would bang.
Spectacular book! Clearly the author is a genius.
Great book if I was 14!, the author did a great job for his age. Just don't read it if you are an adult. It is a good read but by 3/4 I was pushing hard to finish. There is one chapter that I had my wife read because it was so ridiculous just to make sure I wasn't crazy. Maybe the author was being ironic? Either way its a teen book with everyone dying for no apparent reason at all, seems like you get killed just for disagreeing with any one of the characters. Once the author keeps writing and matures, maybe mimic books like The Name of the Wind or the Blade Itself he will be a truly awesome author.
I think that the Prince of Destiny was a very intriguing book and was hard to put down. All in all, this was a exciting book, and I hope there is a sequel.
What an incredible journey from the imagination of a middle schooler! This youth author writes with the sophistication of a mastermind. Thoroughly enjoyed. Know his parents have popped all their buttons.
This is an outstanding novel, written with great lucidity and passion. I bought this for my almost 11 year old and she loved it! Congratulations to the author and waiting the next two installments of this trilogy.
This is hands down THE BEST fantasy novel I have read in a while. The plot is spectacular and I really love how the author weaves multiple sub-plots and counter plots together, culminating in the ultimate quest for the Demon Caller. Vonderheide very successfully creates a world where we can escape into as we join the characters in their battles and struggles to prevail. His extensive use of vivid language and imagery brings highly intricate scenes and characters to life and I could literally see the plot unfold before my eyes. The themes of loyalty, betrayal, romance and magic ring strong throughout the novel and the author had my heart racing at multiple high points throughout the novel. The Prince of Destiny is clearly a page-turner and a book that is really hard to put down. I read late into the night on multiple occasions (much to the dismay of my boss the next morning!) simply because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! For those of you reading this review, consider no more and BUY THIS BOOK! Trust me, you will be glad you did.
